My father told me that if something pisses me off, it’s probably my problem to solve. The 1 Academy was birth out of such passion. I just don’t think the church at large knows what to do with older single people who still have the dream of having a holy, healthy and fun marriage. Our culture is just different than the Boomer Generation. People are waiting later and later to start a family. And having grown up in an environment where my pastors and parents had almost 20 years in marriage and were raising their grown children by the time they were my age, I just don’t know if they knew what to do. Therefore, when I was 33 and newly single, I spent the better part of 13 years developing this idea.
Now that I am newly living my dream of building a family, in my 40’s no less, I want to show you how I did it. However, be it social media, political unrest, or the attempt to redefine “family,” there are several things that are competing for our attention and are bent towards damaging our hope. As Kingdom Citizens, we have the responsibility to mirror for this culture a new standard of normal, functional community. The basic unit of a healthy community is birthed in marriage. I believe the strength of this begins well before you start thinking about being married, let alone being in a monogamous relationship. The seeds of divorce are sown in the premarital process. And if you enter it without the proper self-perspective, you can self-sabotage God’s dream for your life.
